Elementary, Middle and High Schools in the
Southern Vermont towns of Manchester, Arlington and Stratton Mountain are
varied in their mission but they do have an important common thread, that is to
find the "gift" that exists within each child and nurture that gift so that
child will grow into a responsible adult.
Manchester has the
Manchester-Elementary-Middle School (about 500 children K through 8), Maple
Street School (private school about 150 children grades 3 through 8) and Burr
& Burton Academy (about 500 students grades 9 through 12.) Burr &
Burton Academy has the highest SAT scores and the lowest dropout rate (zero
last year) out of the entire 105 High Schools in the state of
Vermont.
Arlington has the Fisher Elementary School
and the Arlington High School, which are about ½ the size of
Manchester's Schools; 250 and 250. Arlington High School has been noted, in
recent years, for their outstanding soccer and basketball teams.
Stratton has the Stratton Mountain School
which is a college preparatory school with a legacy of academic and athletic
achievement. Our very own Ross Powers, Gold Medal winner in snowboarding during
the most recent Olympics graduated from SMS. The Mountain School is a K through
6th grade located right off the access road in Winhall.

Tax Considerations >Tax Reform
Owning a home still offers significant tax benefits. If you are renting, it may be a good time to sit down with a professional real estate agent to see how much you can save each year by owning your own home.
You save in two ways when you purchase a home. Even though most interest deductions have been phased out, home mortgage interest and state and local property taxes can be deducted. The interest on a home equity loan may also be deductible.
Your real estate agent can show you how these savings will apply in your situation. You may be pleasantly surprised when you compare the tax savings you will receive as a result of owning your home, and you will build up equity as your home appreciates in value! Also, first-time buyers will see expanded rules for Individual Retirement Accounts (IRA) and 401(k) plans, allowing penalty-free withdrawals to purchase a home in the Taxpayer Relief Act passed in August, 1997. Consult your tax advisor for your particular circumstance.
